Family Nicknames

In a village the size of Newbold Verdon, names alone could be confusing. Several families shared the same surname over generations, and so nicknames took on practical importance — a way to tell one Frank Statham from another, or to mark a family branch by trade, character or distinguishing detail. Most were given in youth and carried for life; many passed down to children and grandchildren in turn.

Use the search box to filter by nickname, birth name, family or place, or use the Show family dropdown to pick a specific family. Click any column heading to sort by that column.

How to Use This Record

This record gathers nicknames documented across the Statham family and many other Newbold Verdon and Newbold Heath households. Most entries link a nickname to a birth name and known relatives, alongside the village memory and research that accompanies them.

Reading an Entry

Each row records one person and the nickname they were known by. The Family column shows the surname, and where known we list Parents and Grandparents to anchor them in the wider family tree.

The Notes column gathers village recollections, alongside research notes from census and parish records where available.

Searching and Sorting

Type any keyword into the Search box — a surname, a nickname, a street, or a year. The table filters across every column at once. Try Statham, Dragon Lane, 1939, or Choir.

Click any column heading — Family, Nickname, Birth Name — to sort by that column. Click again to reverse the order.

Adding to the Record

Many entries are still incomplete, and some have come down to us as a nickname alone. If you recognise a family, remember a person, or know a name we have missed, we would love to hear from you.

Please use our Contact page and quote the nickname in your message.

The record is updated as new names and memories come to light. Family historians, returning villagers and curious newcomers are warmly encouraged to add to it.
