In April, the Newbold Verdon Parish Archive celebrated its second year of existence. During the Annual
General meeting our Chair, Karen Payne, reminded the members of o achievements so far. Here are a few
of the highlights.

We now have a fully functioning physical archive established at the library where we continue to collect
and archive new materials.

This physical archive is complemented by a digital archive accessible at www.nvparchive.co.uk. Here you
can search the catalogue of not only our archive but also the links to every archived document for
Newbold Verdon, Brascote and Newbold Heath, which are held at the County Records Office in Wigston.

We achieved this by undertaking several visits as a group to the Record Office, scrutinising the actual
documents and writing brief notes that now accompany each link within our catalogue.

Your assistance was invaluable this year when we requested feedback on the website. Thanks to your
input, we made several improvements. We would like to do more and add items such as audio records,
but this may require additional funds to upgrade the site.

Plans for the next 12 months

We have quite a lot of cataloguing to do, thanks to residents like David Preston, who has donated not only much of his own historical documents but also those of what used to be the Newbold Verdon
Archaeological Group. They were very active in the 1970s and 80s and made several major finds in and
around the parish.

We will continue with our ‘History of the Heath’ , but our next big thing is to find out as much as we can
about Newbold’s relationship with coal mining. Some of our ex-miners have been asked if they would like
to take part, and we welcome other miners or their relatives getting in touch to tell us their story. You can contact us using a contact form at the website, or message us on the Facebook Page’ Newbold Verdon Heritage and Archive’.

Additionally, we are participating in a project that commemorates the lives of those who served in the two World Wars, some of whom never returned. Around the 11th. November, a semi-permanent
information board will be placed inside the frame of the existing board opposite the war memorial for about six weeks each year. It will tell the story of the men commemorated on our memorial.
