Jubilee FC 1970

For this month’s article we go back to the early 1970’s. The archive group is not only for recording events that occurred during past centuries but recent history right up until the present day as these events will form the History for future generations.

Jubilee FC of Newbold Verdon originally formed in season 1969 by a group of friends and regulars of the Jubilee and played a few friendlies before being accepted into Division 3 of the Hinckley and District Sunday league at the start of the 1970/71 season where they went on to win the Division and narrowly lost to Division 1 Red Lion Barwell in the final of the league cup.

Further success followed in season 1971/72 winning Division 2, and 1972/73 winning Division 1. At the time the league was recognised as one of the strongest Sunday Leagues in the County. Another notable success for the club was the honour of becoming the first Hinckley and District side to win a County Cup Competition when they defeated Illstone Foxes in the final of the Intermediate Shield.

The 1970’s and 80’s was a boom period for senior football during which the village had 3 senior Sunday league teams The Jubilee, The Swan and Newbold Verdon F C.

am sure that many of the more mature readers will recognise many of the players who were nearly
all village based.
